There is a great editors note in this pulp's readers section, The Wheelhouse":
"It's never easy - and often it's not very safe - to stand up and cheer for the losing side, whether it's at a football game, a little sidewalk argument, or in a Legion skirmish. That's one of the reasons we're surprised and more then a little pleased at L. Ron Hubbard's unusual Foreign Legion story "The Barbarians," which appears in this issue. Whether or not you agree with the viewpoint, you'll have to admit it's a different and a courageous one. We're strictly neutral in the Franco-Moroccan argument - as we suspect Mr. Hubbard is when he's away from the typewriter - but we think he's turned out an imaginative and fist swinging story here, on a theme thats real and off the beaten track. How did you like it?
Incedently, another L. Ron Hubbard story will appear in an early issue, an exciting yarn about United States Leathernecks in the late Nicaraguan unpleasantness."

Personal Adventure Stories - September, 1937 "I Was Buried Alive!"
- I Was Buried Alive! · L. Ron Hubbard
In the article "The Secret of Treasure Island" by Rex W. Layton in the Spring 2003 issue of Blood 'N' Thunder, Rex says "Later, in Puerto Rico, Hubbard and a companion narrowly escaped a mine collapse, described in harrowing detail in his article, 'I Was Buried Alive!' (Personal Adventure Stories, September 1937). This probably inspired the tunnel cave-in pictured in the chapter Four cliffhanger ending [The Secret of Treasure Island]".
According to "The Fiction of L. Ron Hubbard: A Comprehensive Bibliography & Reference Guide to Published and Selected Unpublished Works" by William J. Widder, M.A., Widder states that this story was issued by Argosy to promote the "Hell-Job" series. It is also stated that "I Was Buried Alive!" was in the October 14, 1936 issue of Personal Adventure Stories. But there is no indication that a October 14, 1936 issue of Personal Adventure Stories exists. There is also no October 14, 1936 issue listed in www.philsp.com, Bookery's Guide to Pulps or The Adventure House Guide to the Pulps yet there is a September 1937 issue.
